Expert witness

Vost’s refer to themselves as specialists rather than experts; nonetheless we offer this service mostly, but not exclusively, to the legal profession.

The service is used when a dispute arises between buyer and seller that cannot be settled amicably. It often relates to the attribution of paintings or any mis-description of furniture and works of art. Vost’s do not offer this service with regard to modern jewellery and some other subject areas such as philately and numismatics.

Vost’s thorough knowledge of terminology and catalogue descriptions historically used is vital. A dispute will often arise because of the buyer’s misunderstanding of the way an item is catalogued, in the case of paintings they often fail to read or understand the glossary normally published in a catalogue. It is essential when buying at auction to understand the conditions of sale, if in any doubt ask the auctioneer.

When buying from a dealer it is vitally important to get a receipt that matches, word for word, the description that you have been given of an item you purchase. If you do not do this and there is a subsequent dispute then your case against the seller will be jeopardised.
